Of course, not every teeth-straightening method is appropriate for every orthodontic issue, but it is helpful to know what’s available before sitting down with a dentist or orthodontist for a consultation. The following are the most common methods for correcting crooked teeth: 

 

  • Conventional braces are what most people think of as braces. Traditionally made with metal wires and stainless steel brackets, conventional braces can be affixed to the front of your teeth or on the lingual side for less visibility. 
  • Ceramic braces are also attached to the front of the tooth, but the brackets are made from tooth-colored ceramic that makes them less visible than conventional braces. 
  • Clear aligner trays fit over the teeth and are swapped out for a new size every two weeks. Unlike braces affixed to the teeth, these trays can be removed to eat, brush, and floss.

Braces work by putting pressure on teeth to slowly move them into the correct position. In conventional braces, the wire does the work, and the brackets help hold the wire in place. With Invisalign and Clear Correct, teeth are gradually shifted by way of custom-fitted aligner trays that slip over the teeth.

While braces are a common solution for fixing crooked teeth, they do come with their own set of challenges, such as:

  • Time is a major concern for many people, as braces are typically worn for 12 to 24 months. The exception to this are clear aligner trays, like Invisalign, which can work in as little as 3-6 months.
  • Visibility is another issue, as most braces call attention to themselves and can cause insecurity and self-consciousness. 
  • Pain and discomfort are common at intervals when wires are tightened or new aligner trays put on. 
  • Discipline is the biggest drawback with using aligner trays. In order to work, they must be worn at least 22 hours every day, but because they are removable, it can be all too easy to be less-than-disciplined.
