How Does Internal Teeth Whitening Work?
How do you whiten a dead tooth?
Internal teeth whitening — also called internal bleaching — is the process of whitening a tooth from the inside out. It is the only whitening method that addresses staining caused by dead or infected tooth pulp, prior root canal procedures, or internal structural defects.
If you are a candidate, Dr. Mechev may need to perform root canal therapy first to remove any infected or dead pulp before the bleaching begins. However, when a tooth is discolored due to a previous root canal procedure, he usually only needs to drill a small access hole in the tooth’s surface and just remove the old filling.
Dr. Mechev then places a safe Hydrogen Peroxide paste deep inside the tooth’s cavity. This bleaching agent dissolves stain-causing particles from within, making the tooth’s enamel look white and natural. Once the desired shade is achieved, the tooth is sealed and restored to protect it.

Why Internal Whitening Works When Other Methods Don’t

Dead or Non-Vital Teeth
When a tooth’s pulp dies — from trauma, decay, or infection — the breakdown byproducts leach into the surrounding dentin, causing dark gray or brown discoloration that no external product can reverse.
Post-Root Canal Discoloration
Root canal treatment saves the tooth but sometimes leaves it darker over time as residual organic material oxidizes inside. Internal bleaching removes this discoloration without touching the crown or veneer.

What to Do After an Internal Whitening Procedure
Although internal whitening can make a dark tooth look several shades lighter, the results are not permanent. Certain foods and beverages — red wine, berries, tea, coffee — along with tobacco use can re-stain the enamel over time.

Is internal whitening better than a veneer for a dark tooth?
